How to send a DM when someone comments on Instagram or Facebook

Set up a comment-to-DM automation in about 2 minutes: pick a keyword, write the public reply and the DM, and turn it on. Step by step with FlowAI.

About 2 minutes

Before you start

  • A connected Instagram account or Facebook Page (see "Connect your Instagram or Facebook Page").

Steps

  1. 1

    Open AI Builder

In the left menu, click AI Builder. It walks you through six steps, one at a time, and you can go back to any finished step.

  2. 2

    Choose the account and posts

This is the builder's first step. Choose your account. Under "What starts it", keep "Someone comments on a post". Under "Which posts?", pick "All posts and videos", or "Only the ones I choose" and click the posts you want. Use Newer and Older to browse, and Open to see a post bigger.

  3. 3

    Set the keyword

The second step. Type the word people will comment, like PRICE. It isn't case-sensitive, and the word can be anywhere in their comment.

  4. 4

    Set the public reply

The third step. On Facebook, choose what happens under the comment: a public reply, just a like, both, or neither. On Instagram the reply is always public. Leave Reply speed on Auto. Write the public reply, and add a couple of alternate wordings so it isn't identical every time.

  5. 5

    Write the DM

The fourth step. Write the private message. Add alternates here too, and FlowAI rotates between them. Include your link.

  6. 6

    Extras (optional)

The fifth step. On Instagram you can require people to follow you first. You can also ask for an email or phone number before sending the link. Click Skip if you don't need either.

  7. 7

    Review and activate

The last step. Read the one-sentence summary. If it says what you want, click Activate. Your automation appears under Automations. Turning it on needs your 3-day free trial or a plan; until then it's saved switched off, and you turn it on once the trial starts.

Tips and if something goes wrong

  • Test it first: comment your keyword from a different account than the one that owns the post.
  • Each person gets at most one message from the same automation every 24 hours, even if they comment several times.
  • Alternate wordings help. Sending the exact same text to lots of people is something Meta's spam filters watch for.
  • "Instant" reply speed can look robotic if the keyword gets a lot of comments. Auto adds a delay for you when it's busy.
